The official opening of the Basra Business Incubator on 22nd of December 2021, is the culmination of joint efforts of the Basra governorate, the Slovenian consortium partners, the implementing partner UNDP Iraq, and the financing partner – European Union. The Basra Business incubator will help start-up companies and individual entrepreneurs to develop their businesses by providing a range of services starting with management training, office space, equipment, and business training.

said Jasmina Vidmar, secretary general of the lead partner Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia.

The Basra Business incubator is located at the venue Al Saadi Street at Businessmen Union Center and is equipped with computers, screens, and printers. The Basra Business incubator has its own management team that received training on strategic management and financial participatory approach. The Business incubator will host an employment platform, which will be used to bring together job seekers and companies in the region. The aim the pilot action is to strengthen the capacity of the Basra Governorate to improve the employment opportunities, especially for the young generation in Basra.

Jernej Stritih, the Director of Stritih Sustainable Development Consulting, one of the Slovenian project partners, said at the ceremony:

“This is a major tangible achievement of our project. For this I would like to congratulate our friends on the Basra team. What we have planned together during our workshop in Erbil in August, you have now successfully implemented”.

The Slovenian partners established a good cooperation with the Incubator management team and will continue to provide their support in terms of training and advice over the next months. The partnership will start the work with the business incubator users through the Financial Participatory Approach methodology. Within Financial Participatory approach several rounds of contest will be organized to attract the youth from Basra and support them in implementing their business ideas. Within the frame of these contests Basra Business Incubator will provide trainings and financial awards for the winners. This is how Basra Business Incubator will directly support businesses of young entrepreneurs.

The Business incubator in Basra is one of the results of tight Peer-To-Peer cooperation between Basra Governorate and the project consortium from Slovenia, with the support of the implementing partner UNDP Iraq and the financing partner – European union within the peer-to-peer project »Supporting Recovery and Stability in Iraq through Local Development«.
