As part of the project of peer-to-peer cooperation between the Basra governorate and Slovenian partners, a competition for the best entrepreneurial ideas has been held since the beginning of the year. To appropriately celebrate the 16 winners, who successfully made it through three rounds of assessment and had the best business idea with the most elaborate business plan among the 228 entrants, an award ceremony was held in Basra central library on 31st of March 2022.

The awarded entrepreneurial ideas were especially outstanding because of their originality, a good entrepreneurial plan, scalability, sustainability, or social impact. The business ideas of the winners are very diverse. They include the establishment of a Training and Development Center or education center for astronomy, production of special artistic products, natural cosmetics production, lingerie production, restaurant with online service, food production, honey farming, perfumed candles, a factory for Arabic cooking accessories, sweets production, leather production, designer clothes manufacturing or an art workshop for Basra artists.

As Mouin al-Hassan, Basra governor’s spokesperson pointed out at the ceremony, the governorate is pleased with the success of this project, mainly the establishment of a business incubator in Basra, and is especially proud of the incredible energy of active individuals and their great business ideas. The winners of the competition were handed out certificates and a financial incentive for the further development of their business idea.

Representatives of the business incubator, representatives of the Basra governorate and Slovenian partners will continue to monitor and support the recipients of the award, especially through business education and promotional activities in the region.

The Basra governorate will soon launch an employment platform, designed based on good practice examples from Slovenia. The basic functionalities of the employment platform were presented at the event. The platform will also enable the recipients of the award to be visible on it, as it will make it easier for them to find partners to develop their business.

The described activities are part of the Peer-to-Peer project Between the Association of municipalities and towns of Slovenia and the governorate of Basra, Under Supporting Recovery and Stability in Iraq through Local Development programme, Funded by the European Union (EU) and Implemented by the United Nations Development programme (UNDP).
